We are a village, growing together
November 5, 2021
Dear families,
Many of our families have now made the switch back to face-to-face learning. It is fantastic to see smiling faces back at school. Please remember that if you want your child(ren) to return to the physical building, you just need to call our office or send an email to cornell.village.ps@yrdsb.ca.
Next week is Remembrance Day. Since we are unable to come together as a school for an assembly, classes will be learning about this significant day within their classrooms.
If there is anything you need our assistance with, please call us at the school. We are here to help!
Wishing all of our families a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Scott Chin Leeann Morrow
Principal Vice Principal

2. School Start Up Forms
Parents/guardians received an email from YRDSB Update with important school start-up forms to complete. It is important that these forms are completed as soon as possible at the start of the school year as they contain important information and permissions.
The forms can be found at https://startupforms.yrdsb.ca/.
A link to the forms can also be found on the Family Resources page of the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca/familyresources. Click on the Need Help link beside Family Startup Forms for additional information on how to log in to the Student GAPPS account to complete the forms.
Please note:
You must be signed in to your child’s student GAPPS account to complete the form. Please remember to sign out of one account (on google chrome browser) before signing into another. Additional information is available on the Board website on how to login to the student account to complete the forms.
The forms should be completed for each student, whether they are attending school in person or participating in remote, online learning.
If you prefer to complete the forms on paper or have questions about the information in the forms, please contact the school office.
TECH TIPS: Anyone experiencing difficulty completing your forms try….
Updated instructions are posted on the Startup Package homepage to include the following instructions:
Tips for completing forms for multiple students
1. Login at https://google.yrdsb.ca with the first student's GAPPS account information
2. Once signed in, return to this page (https://startupforms.yrdsb.ca/)
3. Complete the forms for the specific student you are currently logged into
4. Once submitted, return to https://google.yrdsb.ca and sign out of the account (click on the student icon in the upper right corner and select Sign Out)
5. Repeat the steps above to complete forms for additional students.
Finally, opening a browser in “Incognito” mode will also ensure previous logins are no longer in session.
3. Health and Safety:
York Region Public Health requires students and staff members to use the provincial COVID-19 school and child care screening tool. Students, parents and guardians will still be able to access the link to the tool through the York Region Staying Safe at School webpage. Please see this message from York Region Public Health which contains important screening and testing updates.
4. Parent/ Guardian Teacher Interviews:
Cornell Village Public School will once again be using an online process through Edsby to manage our Parent/Guardian-Teacher Interviews scheduling. Interviews will be 15 minutes in length. Progress reports will be coming home electronically beginning Monday, November 15th. As per our electronic process, it may take a couple of days for families to receive all their children’s reports. Parent/Guardian Interviews will be on Thursday, November 18th ~4:00-8:00pm and Friday, November 19th 9am-12pm.
Edsby (Online Sign Up Platform): Edsby is an intuitive, cloud-based platform that will allow families to easily reserve times to meet with their child’s teachers. YRDSB in partnership with Edsby have created a secure platform that protects the privacy of information for our YRDSB families.
Families will need to create an Edsby account to access the online appointment scheduler for their child’s teachers for Student Led Conferences. Only families who create an Edsby account prior to the schedule being opened (on DATE) will have access. For help signing up for Parent/Guardian-Teacher interviews, please visit http://bit.ly/ptifamily.
You will receive an email from York Region District School Board (today) with instructions on how to create an Edsby account. If you do not see the email, please check your junk mail folder to ensure you do not miss this opportunity.
*IMPORTANT REVISED: You will not have access to book Homeroom teachers only. Rotary teachers (Visual Arts, Music, Phys-Ed, and French) will contact families if they require a meeting. Please be aware that these teachers may teach between 6-15 or more classes with upwards of 30 students in each class. It will not be possible for them to meet with 300 families individually. If your child is experiencing difficulty in that subject area, you can also reach out to that teacher to arrange an interview. Please reach out by email to arrange a time and date to meet. NOTE: some teachers may be travelling home immediately after school on Thursday, therefore interview time availability may vary.
NEED A TRANSLATOR - please email Mr. Chin (scott.chin@yrdsb.ca) and let him know the following information: your child’s name, homeroom teacher, language of translation, best times for interviews (Thurs, Nov 18 evenings/ Fri, Nov 19 morning or Either)
If you have any questions about the Interview process or have difficulty booking the interviews once they are posted, please contact our main office.

6. YRDSB Secondary Arts Program (please see attached flyer)
Dear Parent/Custodian,
We are happy to once again to announce that for the 2022/2023 school year the Secondary Arts Program is available to international fee-paying students who are currently in Grade 8, residing in Canada, and attending a YRDSB school. Since your child is in grade 8, they are now eligible to register and audition for the program.
At the present time, we are asking you to complete a short survey to let us know if you are interested in pursuing the Secondary Arts Program for your child. Please take a few moments to answer the survey before Friday, November 5, 2021.
We will share more information with parents who express an interest in pursuing this program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office directly at international.education@yrdsb.ca.
Spaces are limited and placement will be based on the spaces available at each school location. More information is available by visiting each of the Regional School websites below.
Registration begins in November. Students will be required to audition, and the cost of the audition is $25.00.
7. Indoor Sports – Intra-school (Extra-curricular) and Inter-school
Through extensive consultation with the York Region Public Health, indoor high contact sports (eg. volleyball, basketball, ice hockey) will be permitted at YRDSB. In order to ensure the safety of all student athletes and staff coaches, all student athletes must be fully vaccinated (double-vaccinated) to participate in intra-school (extra-curricular) and inter-school high-contact sports.
For any indoor high-contact sports that a school offers outside of instructional time, all participating students must provide proof of being fully vaccinated. Our board will notify schools and families about a centralized process by which participating students will be able to attest that they have been fully vaccinated.
Please note that safety protocols are also being developed to ensure consistency of understanding of expectations and requirements. While this is great news for our students, recognizing the tremendous interest our students have in being able to participate in intra-school (extra-curricular) and inter-school athletics, we also need to ensure that our students can compete in these sports in a safe manner.
*Upcoming we will be starting with a sign up for Grade 7 and 8 students for Intermediate Volleyball team tryouts and skills clinics. Students may not have had their second vaccination but will be able to participate in skills clinics leading up to our Volleyball season. A letter will go home if students are interested and permission will be required to participate in the skills clinics and tryouts. Ms. Baillie and Mr. Chin will be coaching the Intermediate Volleyball team(s) / club this year. Note: we do not have any guidelines for inter school play but will begin with Skills Development and Practice. Further information will be shared in the participation form.
