Students, parents and guardians will still be able to access the link to the tool through the York Region Staying Safe at School webpage. Please see this message from York Region Public Health which contains important screening and testing updates.

Although, it’s lower likelihood of ticks in the area during fall and winter.  Please keep your eye out for ticks.  Please see the attached flyer from York Public Health about Lymes disease.

4.  Parent/ Guardian Teacher Interviews:

Cornell Village Public School will once again be using an online process through Edsby to manage our Parent/Guardian-Teacher Interviews scheduling.  Interviews will be 15 minutes in length. Progress reports will be coming home electronically beginning Monday, November 15th.  As per our electronic process, it may take a couple of days for families to receive all their children’s reports.  Parent/Guardian Interviews will be on Thursday, November 18 4:00-8:00 and Friday, November 19th 9am-12pm.

Edsby (Online Sign Up Platform): Edsby is an intuitive, cloud-based platform that will allow families to easily reserve times to meet with their child’s teachers. YRDSB in partnership with Edsby have created a secure platform that protects the privacy of information for our YRDSB families.

Families will need to create an Edsby account to access the online appointment scheduler for their child’s teachers for Student Led Conferences. Only families who create an Edsby account prior to the schedule being opened (on DATE) will have access. For help signing up for Parent/Guardian-Teacher interviews, please visit http://bit.ly/ptifamily

You will receive an email from York Region District School Board (today) with instructions on how to create an Edsby account. If you do not see the email, please check your junk mail folder to ensure you do not miss this opportunity.

*IMPORTANT REVISED:  You will not have access to book Homeroom teachers only.   Rotary teachers (Visual Arts, Music, Phys-Ed, and French) will contact families if they require a meeting.   Please be aware that these teachers may teach between 6-15 or more classes with upwards of 30 students in each class.  It will not be possible for them to meet with 300 families individually.  If your child is experiencing difficulty in that subject area, you can also reach out to that teacher to arrange an interview.  Please reach out by email to arrange a time and date to meet. NOTE: some teachers may be travelling home immediately after school on Thursday, therefore interview time availability may vary.

NEED A TRANSLATOR - please email Mr. Chin (scott.chin@yrdsb.ca) and let him know the following information: your child’s name, homeroom teacher, language of translation, best times for interviews (Thurs, Nov 18 evenings/  Fri, Nov 19 morning or Either)

5. Safety Alert - Coyote Sightings

Dear Families

Although we did not see our Coyote friend this week, we checked in with Animal Control to find out more about our friendly neighbourhood coyote

Please see the following additional items

-currently Coyotes are in the “roaming phase” which means they are looking for food for 19-20 hours a day so they may be out and about more often in the next few weeks

-typically small dogs off leash / on long leashes, are an issue and a potential food source for our friends.  Even large dogs off leash can be seen as a competition for food sources and can lead to coyote-dog confrontations

-coyotes should not be approaching you or your children -if so please call the town Animal Control immediately.

-#1 rule… remind students not to run away, they are to back away slowly if approached by a coyote / it’s nearby.

Please see the information copied from the City of Markham Website:

https://www.markham.ca/wps/portal/home/permits-licenses-taxes/animal-services/Wildlife

Foxes and coyotes are adaptable intelligent animals that can be found in rural and urban areas throughout Ontario. They are often found near ravine systems, large grassy fields, and large parks; small mammals are a main staple in their diet.

Foxes and coyotes are an important part of our shared, local ecosystems. By understanding their behaviour, we can learn to coexist peacefully and even develop a deeper appreciation for our wild neighbours. Typically, foxes and coyotes are unlikely to initiate contact with people. But we understand, occasionally, they get too close for comfort.

Limiting human food sources is the best way to prevent encounters with these animals - but, most importantly, to help keep them wild:

·         Do not put out food for animals.

·         Keep waste in secure bins or store bins in a secure building or container.

·         Do not put waste bins out until the morning of pick-up.

·         Make sure outdoor compost containers are wildlife-proof.

·         Remove fallen fruit from trees and scattered bird seed from feeders.

·         Keep pet food inside, and do not leave small pets outdoors unattended.

If you do encounter a coyote who does not run away immediately, you can do the following:

·     Make noise, yell, clap your hands, stomp and wave your arms.

·     Do not approach the animal.

·     Carry a whistle or noisemaker if you are walking in known habitat areas.

If you find that the animal is sick or injured, please report it to our wildlife service provider, by calling 905.415.7531. It is also important to keep your furry family members safe. Keep your cats or small dogs indoors or supervised outside. Walk your dogs on a leash and do not leave them out unattended.

Why can’t coyotes be relocated?

Capture and relocation of coyotes more than one kilometer away is not permitted under Ontario's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Research shows wildlife relocated from urban areas usually return home or become a problem elsewhere. In addition, when coyotes are hunted or lethally destroyed, remaining ones compensate by producing larger litters and expanding their range. Only in rare cases where an individual coyote is demonstrating unusual / aggressive behaviour or severe trauma or illness do animal control agencies attempt to capture coyotes.

 6. Halloween Message

Please see the linked York Public Health message about having a Safe “Fangtastic” Halloween.

For those of you taking our students out trick or treating this weekend we  just wanted to provide you with a few safety reminders provided to us by York Public Health

While it is great news children can resume trick-or-treating this year, it is important to recognize we are still in a pandemic and we need to continue making safe choices and practice the following public health measures:

  • Trick-or-treat outdoors as much as possible

  • If you are trick-or-treating indoors, such as in an apartment complex, maintain physical distancing as much as possible and wear a face covering, especially when physical distancing is a challenge

  • Stay home if you or your little ones are feeling ill or have even mild symptoms, even if fully vaccinated

  • Do not congregate or linger at doorsteps; keep interactions brief and maintain physical distancing while trick-or-treating as much as possible

  • Whether trick-or-treating or handing out treats, clean your hands often throughout the evening using soap and water or with hand sanitizer

  • Parents are encouraged to be creative and fashion a face covering into their child’s Halloween costume design; a costume mask is no substitute for a proper face covering
